2008 race 2 - Silverstone
Sunday, 06 April 2008 20:31

As the 2CVs lined up for race 2, the weather had brightened up a little and the sun was shining down on a previously rain-soaked Silverstone. The track was more-or-less dry, but a bit slippery off the racing line, so some care was still needed.

As the red lights were extinguished and the race began, Pete Sparrow once again moved ahead of the pack and converted his second pole position of the day into the lead of the race. Phil Myatt and Mark Turner were contesting 2nd place, with Turner looking like he had the edge. The cars were 2 abreast around Luffield for nearly all of the pack, looking for all the world like a NASCAR rolling start.

Matt Riley was the first one to visit the gravel traps of Silverstone in race 2, sliding into the trap at Becketts. He was able to continue, albeit a long way down the field. There was contact between Sammie Fritchley and Martin Hindley at Brooklands corner, which ended with Sammie losing a rear wing, and having to come into the pits. She was able to rejoin a short time later.

Meanwhile, Wayne Cowling was charging up the field into 4th, and Trevor Williams and Richard Hollis were once again getting friendly in the battle for 7th place. Derek Coghill was also looking strong. He was 5th at this point in 'Nessie', after starting in 6th place.

The batle for 7th place was now 3 cars abreast, featuring Trevor Williams, Greg Wheeler, Andrew Pirt, and Richard Hollis on lap 4, and by the next lap, Coghill had moved up past Cowling, taking 4th place after a small mistake by Wayne. Wayne didn't lose much time in getting the place back however, and the 4th place battle was now joined by Mark Turner, who had dropped back a little from earlier in the race. Sparrow's lead was again quite noticeable now, with Byatt in 2nd, Myatt in 3rd, and everyone else in 4th!

The number 12 car of Aubrey Brocklebank had somehow managed to break its exhaust, which was trailing around to the right hand side of the car, sounding like a WWII bomber. Derek Coghill had once again slipped up to 4th place by lap 6, and it was looking like the battle for 4th place was going to be fiercely contested. On lap 7, 4th place was the place to be for Coghill, Cowling, and Byatt. Further down the field, Greg Wheeler and Helen Deeley looked to be having a good scrap.

Lap 9, and 4th place was now contested by Mark Turner, followed by Andrew Pirt, then Coghill, Cowling, Richard Hollis, and Trevor Williams, as fast as you could say the names. Further back, the 90 JB Doors car of Darren Baker was involved in a scrap with the Rocket Dog car of Andy Smith and Pete Cardell-Williams, and Matt Hollis was battling with Jack Gabriel and Martin Harrold in the Fine Print car.

Pete Sparrow set fastest lap of the race so far on lap 10, and Rich Hollis lost 2 places. Andrew Pirt sneaked into 4th place, and Helen Deeley was engaged in combat with chairman Aubrey Brocklebank. A queue was forming behind the 97 Fine Print car. Phil Myatt was pushing the 14 car of Byatt on lap 11, and Richard Hollis slid off into the gravel at Becketts.

On lap 12, with Gary Byatt still pushing Phil Myatt for 2nd, Matt Hollis and Jack Gabriel had a coming together at Becketts. Both were able to continue, but Jack Gabriel called into the pits on the same lap, and Matt Hollis continued, albeit at a very much slower pace.

The battle for 4th was still raging, and on lap 15 it was occupied by Mark Turner. Just behind were Trevor Williams and Andrew Pirt. Going into the last lap, Phil Myatt managed to get ahead of Gary Byatt, and then the order was Williams, Pirt, Coghill, Turner and Richard Hollis.

As the chequered flag flew, Pete Sparrow took another comfortable win in the ECAS car, Phil Myatt's car crossed the line in 2nd, with Gary Byatt a second behind. Trevor Williams claimed a hard fought 4th spot, followed closeley by Andrew Pirt, Mark Turner, Derek Coghill and Richard Hollis.

Another excellent race from the 2CVs at Silverstone!
