2008 race 6 - Oulton Park
Monday, 26 May 2008 22:34

Race two started with Phil Myatt in pole position, complete with pink wheels on the front of the car, and blue wheels on the back. Paul Robertson later explained that these were borrowed from Zoe's car, but personally I think Phil was just showing his soft side. The skies were overcast, it was noticably colder than the first race, and the race meeting was running nearly an hour late after a series of red flag incidents in the other races of the day. The 2CV races were later commended by the circuit commentators for providing close action without the need for the organisers to bring out the red flags!

Once again Mark Turner was right at the sharp end of the grid, and took 2nd on the grid, with Wayne Cowling starting the race in 3rd and Richard Hollis lining up 4th. As the lights went out on the start of the race, Hindley made an excellent start from down in 15th and was already making up places. Turner had shot into the lead ahead of Myatt, and Rich Hollis moved into 3rd, demoting Cowling to 4th. At the back of the grid, the orange car of Christian Callander, now being piloted by Pete Sparrow, was having a nightmare. Pete had managed to find the 'on' switch for the horn, but couldn't find the 'off' temporarily. As the car parped its way along the straight and bumped over the grass at Old Hall, it also became clear that it had no drive.

At the end of lap 2, Myatt had claimed the lead back at Lodge corner from Turner, and there was now a bit of a gap back to 3rd place Rich Hollis, who had the attentions of Cowling and Riley. Beyond them in 6th was Panas, then Sammie Fritchley, then Helen Deeley. The orange 28 car of Sparrow was now circulating the track again, but there was something obviously wrong with the exhaust, as it was clearly the loudest thing on or near the track. Matthew Hollis had managed to get past Nick Finch in the number 68 car, and the two were having a good scrap.

The order was mostly unchanged on lap 4, just with Cowling swapping places with Rich Hollis and taking 3rd, and Sammie Fritchley taking 6th from Panas. Darren Baker had got past Matt Hollis, who in turn had Aubrey Brocklebank for company just behind him.

Lap 5 saw another lead swap - Turner once again taking over from Myatt at the front. Nick Finch got past Martin Hindley, and Aubrey got past both Matt Hollis and Baker for 14th place. Aubrey had started 23rd and last on the grid, after his battery charging problems in qualifying earlier in the day, so was pleased to be making up ground.

However, Aubrey's celebrations were shortlived, as on the next lap he was shown the 'meatball' flag by race control. The flag is black with an orange circle in the centre, and indicates that there's something wrong with your car which you may not be aware of, and may be dangerous. In Aubrey's case, a loose fuel filler cap was the cause, and spilling fuel out during left-hand corners was the effect. Sparrow had also been given the black/orange flag, but for services to the hearing aid industry, due to his broken exhaust.

Panas and Fritchley swapped places again, and Andy Smith in the 13 car got past them both, elevating himself to 6th. Nick Finch explored the grass/plastic runoff at Lodge, rejoining unharmed at Deer Leap. At the same time, Darren Baker made a slight mistake, ran wide and lost 3 places. Sparrow called into the pits on lap 7, and unfortunately had to retire the car - unable to fix the broken exhaust. Aubrey also called into the pits, but was allowed to leave again after rectifying the loose filler cap.

Steve Panas made a move on Andy Smith on lap 8, while Derek Coghill's car, now piloted by Graham Harper, was battling with Jack Gabriel. At the end of lap 9, it was still Turner in front of Myatt at the front, although they were closer now. Lap 10 was to be the final lap, as the day's red flags had meant curtailing some of the race so they could finish before the curfew. 3rd was still Cowling, then Rich Hollis in 4th, Riley in 5th, and now Helen Deeley had made her way up to 6th.

On the last lap, Sammie Fritchley missed her braking point, and there was a coming together between her car, Steve Panas, and Andy Smith. Sadly this put Sammie out of the race. Cowling was very nearly overtaken by Richard Hollis, but as the chequered flag flew, it was another win for Mark Turner*, closely followed by Phil Myatt, only 0.184 seconds adrift. Then a bit of a gap back to 3rd place Cowling, with Rich Hollis only 0.3 seconds behind him in 4th, and Riley only 0.097 seconds behind Richard! 6th was Helen Deeley after a good consistant drive, and Nick Finch made 7th, after the coming together of Smith and Panas, who finished 8th and 9th respectively. Andrew Pirt made up the top 10.

* However, as Mark Turner's car failed post-race scrutineering, he has been disqualified, and Phil Myatt has been awarded the win for Oulton Park race 2.
