2008 race 5 - Oulton Park
Monday, 26 May 2008 21:50

Despite dire forecasts of rain all weekend, the sun was shining over the picturesque circuit of Oulton Park, as the 2CV championship headed into Cheshire for races 5 and 6.

Most went through qualifying without problem, but Aubrey Brocklebank experienced some battery charging issues and didn't qualify in the second session. Trevor Williams also had reduced running in session 1, completing only 3 laps, and didn't take part in session 2 at all.

Race 1 got under way just after lunch, with Pete Sparrow starting from pole position, in the new number 10 Sparrow/Shoebridge car. Mark Turner started 2nd, and Phil Myatt started 3rd. Yellow flags were waving around the 6th placed car of Richard Hollis, who seemed to have stalled on the grid and couldn't restart. His car was pushed into the off the grid and would start from the pitlane in last place.

As the red lights faded out and the race began, Sparrow swiftly confirmed his lead into Old
Hall corner. The order of the top 3 remained unchanged, and they were chased by Wayne Cowling in 4th, Matt Riley in 5th and Neil Thompson, who got a great start and moved up to 6th.

The order at the front remained unchanged after a few laps, Myatt briefly moving up to 2nd and then dropping back and pitting on lap 4. Thompson moved up to 4th, was mugged by Cowling and Riley, before settling back into 4th after Myatt's departure. The green expanse of "grasscrete" runoff at Old Hall corner was enticing to some drivers, and Steve Panas and Christian Callander took a brief trip over it, before returning to the track. Also calling at the pits was Trevor Williams on lap 3, but after a short spell stationary, he was off and running again.

With a gap now developing behind Sparrow and Turner, and Cowling still hanging onto 3rd, Neil Thompson slipped back a little behind Riley and Martin Hindley, and was joined in a 3-wide battle for 6th place by Pete Cardell-Williams and Steve Panas. Andy Pirt took to the grass at Island hairpin, to rejoin a few moments later.

Andy Smith was now the man on the move, overtaking Thompson and Hindley on lap 6. Thompson himself was past Hindley on the next lap. Smith jostled his way past Riley and Cowling on laps 8 and 9, but was put firmly back in 5th on lap 10. Meanwhile, Christian Callander was battling with Richard Hollis around Cascades corner, with Christian getting past Hollis at the Knickerbrook chicane. Darren Baker was also battling around Cascades, with the number 43 car of Steve Jaques.

Out front it was still Sparrow and Turner but now the order had reversed, with Turner taking the lead. less than a car's length separated the two. Cowling was still 3rd, with the company of Matt Riley and PCW never out of his mirrors. Jack Gabriel fought with Trevor Williams for the minor placings, with Trevor getting the inside and through at Knickerbrook.

Meanwhile, after pitting on lap 4, Phil Myatt was storming up the field. He was overtaking 1 or 2 cars per lap, but on lap 10 he claimed 4 scalps to net 7th place, and by the next lap he had stormed past Neil Thompson for 6th. Unfortunately, time was not on his side, as the 25 minute race was coming to an end.

As the chequered flag came out at the end of 12 laps, Turner took the win, followed by Sparrow with a gap of just 0.29 seconds. Cowling claimed 3rd, 29 seconds behind, with Riley in 4th, Cardell-Williams in 5th, Myatt in 6th, Thompson in 7th, and Sammie Fritchley in 8th. Andy Pirt finished 9th, Panas 10th, and Aubrey Brocklebank was 11th. Derek Coghill was almost assured of 12 place, but a braking problem at Cascades on the last lap saw him spinning into the gravel. He was able to recover and finished 17th.
